Thyrnau Castle

Already in the Middle Ages, the site of Thyrnau served as the seat of Passau ministerials. In 1692, Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Lamberg acquired the property for 46,000 guilders from Baron Schätzl zu Watzmannsdorf und Hörmannsberg. Lamberg's successor had the original building demolished in 1714 and a new castle erected by master builder Domenico d'Angeli. Under Prince-Bishop Leopold Ernst von Firmian, the castle underwent extensions in 1763, including an additional attic floor, a clock gable, and a turret. A deer park was also laid out. After secularization in Bavaria, the castle passed to the Bavarian state, which sold it in 1822 to Johann Lorenz Freiherr von Schaezler.
