Tiffen Castle

The so-called Gschlosser Hube in Tiffen in the municipality of Steindorf am Ossiacher See is the former Tiffen Castle.

The property was sold in 1560 by Leonhard von Keutschach to the brothers Hans and Barthelmeä Khevenhüller. Since 1728, the Gschlosser Hube has been in peasant family ownership. The castle, described in 1620 as a representative Renaissance building, was largely altered in the Baroque period and after the fire of 1931.

The former castle is a two to three-story rubble stone building with a half-hipped roof, connected to a tower-like structure in the north. The fan-like plaster structures on the south and east facades and the wide plaster band of the northwest tower window date from the 16th century. The murals of Saint Florian, a Madonna of Grace, and a male saint above the portal were painted in the 18th century in a folk style. Inside, room and vault forms from the 15th/16th century have been preserved. In the southeast corner room of the second upper floor, there is a remarkable Renaissance beam ceiling.

In addition to the main building, remnants of the former defensive wall, a Gothic box building, and a Gothic granary building are preserved. The box building is a two-story rubble stone building with chamfered window frames with grilles from the 15th/16th century. The ground floor, used as a stable, is a two-aisled hall with three central pillars and a mighty barrel vault with lunettes. In the granary building, a two-story rubble stone building from the 15th/16th century with a half-hipped roof, numerous antique spolia are immured.
