Tinz Castle

The origins of Tinz Palace date back to the Middle Ages, when a moated castle stood on the same site. Between 1745 and 1748, the current Baroque palace was constructed according to plans by Gerardo Hofmann. Building commenced under Heinrich XXV Reuß-Gera and was completed under his son Heinrich XXX with the finishing of the park. The palace served the House of Reuß as a summer residence and dower house. An originally existing, geometrically arranged moat, spanned by bridges, was filled in 1975. From 1827, the palace stood empty and was repeatedly used for military purposes, including as accommodation for soldiers during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 and as a military hospital in World War I. After its expropriation by the Workers' and Soldiers' Council in 1918, it housed a socialist folk high school from 1920.
