History+

The origins of Todenwarth date back to 1185, when a fortification named “Warthe” was first mentioned. Located at a ford of the Werra river and a trade route, it served to secure the border. In the 14th century, the site was taken over by the Counts of Henneberg, who expanded it into a toll castle. Goods were taxed here, and the road passed through the castle gates.
