Töllerberg Castle

The name of the castle derives from a Hainricus Tolr, who appears in records from 1193 to 1220. The fortified building itself first appears in 1297, when Bishop Hertnid of Gurk sold "den turen ze Toelrbrech" to Konrad von Aufenstein. Under the Aufensteins, the old tower was transformed into a fortified house.

Who claimed the rights to Töllerberg after the fall of the Aufensteins in 1368 is not clearly evident, probably the Habsburgs as territorial lords. Only at the beginning of the 16th century do records of Töllerberg reappear. Around the turn of the century, the Obdachers resided at Töllerberg. Their successors were the Welzers, who received Töllerberg as a fief from Archduke Karl in 1577. In 1595, Ehrenreich von Windischgrätz appears as the owner.

At that time, Töllerberg was already equipped with a keep. Around the turn of the 16th century, the south wing was added. After the death of Ehrenreich Windischgrätz in 1614, there was a rapid change of ownership. Thus, in 1618 Martin von Palmburg, in 1620 Georg Siegmund zu Egg and Hungersbach, in 1629 Sebald Vitztum von Perlsreuth, the Schneeweiß brothers, in 1651 Franz Reimund Rahmschießl, in 1690 Johann Jacob Faulner, and after 1690 Karl Ludwig Kliess were the owners.

After 1703, Töllerberg must have passed from the Counts of Welz to the Waisenberg dominion, which sold it in 1713 to Count Balthasar Christallnigg. In 1779, Countess Marianne Göss, born Christallnigg, sold the castle to Baron Karl von Seenuhs. In 1812, it was auctioned and acquired by Count Dismas Christallnigg. In 1852, it was again auctioned and acquired by Gabriel Ritter von Jessernigg, whose descendants still own the castle today.
