Tollet Castle

The origins of Tollet Castle date back to 1170, when Ortlof von Tollet erected a first fortification on a hill above the Trattnachtal valley. After the Tolleter family died out in 1273, the complex reverted to the Lordship of Ort. In 1331, it came into the possession of the Lerbühler family, who expanded the castle. Later, Dietmut von Lerbühler married into the Jörger family, who rose to become one of the noble families in the region. Under Hans V. Jörger von Tollet, the castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style between 1601 and 1611. His open support of Protestantism led to an accusation of high treason and the loss of his property. Around 1625, Adam Graf von Herberstorff acquired the castle. After further changes of ownership, Tollet came into the possession of the Counts Revertera y Salandra in 1845, who undertook renovations. During World War II, the castle was confiscated and served as a school and military hospital. After the war, it was used as a refugee camp and barracks before threatening to fall into disrepair in the 1980s. Renovation from 2002 to 2009 saved the castle from decline.
