Traun Castle, a castle complex in Upper Austria, is in the city of Traun. Originally a moated castle, it serves as a cultural center.

History+

The first documented mention of the complex as a moated castle dates to around 1120, associated with Bernhard de Trune. The Traun family, originally a free lineage, later descended into the ministerialis of various rulers, including the Otakars, Babenbergs, and from 1246 the Bishops of Passau. Until 1630, the ancestral castle remained in the family's possession. Due to his Protestant faith, Siegmund Adam von Traun had to sell the lordship to Werner t’Serklaes von Tilly. The latter dissolved the feudal bond and converted Traun into a free allodial property.
