Schloss Traunsee, also known as Schloss Württemberg, stands in Altmünster on the shores of the lake of the same name in Upper Austria. It transformed from a ducal retreat into an educational institution.

History+

Between 1872 and 1875, Duke Philipp of Württemberg had the castle built as a summer villa for his wife Archduchess Maria Theresia, a granddaughter of Archduke Karl. The building was named Villa Maria Theresia. After the Duke's death in 1917, the estate passed to Duchess Marie Therese before being sold to her sons Robert and Ulrich in 1927. During and after the First World War, it served as a refugee camp and a military hospital. From 1935, it was leased to the regional tourism association and from 1938, it was used by the regional administration of Gau Oberdonau. The planning of the French Renaissance style castle was undertaken by architect Heinrich Adam.
