Trautenburg Castle

The first documented mention of the estate occurred in 1234 as the court of Reinhard II von Mureck, the lord of Schmirenberg. Unlike Schmirenberg Castle, which was a fief of St. Paul's Abbey in Lavanttal, the farmstead always remained in the possession of the respective castle lord. In the early 14th century, the court passed to the Graz family Wakkerzil, who expanded it into a noble residence. In 1493, the lords of Trautmannsdorf took over the property. Under Ehrenreich von Trautmannsdorf, the residence was expanded into a four-winged castle starting in 1581. He also received permission to rename the building, previously known as Leutschach Castle, to Trautenburg.
