Trautenburg Castle

From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance

The first documentary mention of Trautenburg Castle dates back to 1143. At that time, it was a medieval moated castle, strategically located on the banks of the River Bode. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times, often through marriage or conquest. In the 14th century, the von Trautenburg family, after whom the castle is named, acquired the property and began to expand it.

The Renaissance Castle

The current appearance of Trautenburg Castle is largely due to the extensive reconstruction in the Renaissance style, which began in 1575 under the direction of Master Builder Hans Krumme. The medieval fortifications were replaced by a magnificent residential castle, reflecting the wealth and status of its owners. Characteristic features of this period are the ornate gables, the bay windows, and the impressive portal with the family coat of arms.

Changes in the 18th and 19th Centuries

Around 1800, further modifications were made, particularly to the interior of the castle. Rooms were modernized, and new heating systems were installed. The castle remained in the possession of various noble families throughout the 19th century, who used it as a representative residence and administrative center for their estates.

Expropriation and Post-War Period

A significant turning point in the history of Trautenburg Castle occurred in 1945. After the end of the Second World War, the owners were forcibly expropriated by the communists as part of the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone. The castle subsequently served various purposes, including as a refugee accommodation and a school.

Current Use

Today, Trautenburg Castle has found a new and lively purpose. It serves as a daycare center, providing space for children to play, learn, and grow. This new use brings life back into the historic walls and ensures that the castle remains a vibrant part of the community of Ottleben.
