Travers Castle
In the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel, Travers Castle is a former noble residence. It stands at an elevation of approximately 734 meters above sea level, overlooking the Areuse, not far from the local church.
History+
The first documented mention of the house of Travers dates back to 1525. In 1553, a barn was added. A flood of the Areuse in 1572 is said to have damaged parts of the old castle. Two years later, in 1574, Jean of Neuchâtel, who was also co-regent of Vaumarcus, received permission to expand his estate. In 1656, the State Council intervened to oblige the inhabitants of Travers to assist in procuring materials for castle repairs. A division of the building in 1692 resulted in Charles-Auguste and Frédéric-Louis de Bonstetten receiving the western part of the building, while Henri Sandoz, Lord of Noiraigue, was granted the eastern part, and partition walls were erected. The eastern half was sold to Jean-Henri Jeanrenaud in 1750. After the death of Jean de Bonstetten, the western part passed to Jean-Jacques de Sandoz in 1761. Finally, the Sandoz-Rosières repurchased the eastern part of the building in 1782.
