Tribuswinkel Castle

The origins of Tribuswinkel Castle date back to the first mentions of a Jubort de Tribuswinchele in a document from Heiligenkreuz Abbey in 1136. An initial defensive structure, likely a moated castle, was built between 1120 and 1230. The Tribuswinkel family is traceable until the 14th century, followed by the Lords of Mistelbach and Wolfgang von Winden, in whose family the property remained until 1527. Thereafter, ownership changed frequently, including the Starhembergs, Streun von Schwarzenau, and Hoyos. In 1588, Georg Federl acquired the castle, whose conflicts with the Catholic Church prompted Archduke Mathias to intervene. After further changes of ownership, including Johann Hector Count Isolani and the Wägele von Walsegg family, who owned it from 1666 to 1772 with an interruption from 1707 to 1733, Tribuswinkel served as a refuge during the Turkish Wars. In the 19th century, the castle underwent renovations and was acquired by the Barons von Doblhoff in 1877. A visit by Crown Princess Stephanie in 1900 fueled rumors of a purchase, which later proved to be incorrect.
