Trockau Castle

Trockau Castle is located on the western edge of the village of Trockau (a district of Pegnitz) in the Bayreuth district. The three-story building from the second half of the 18th century has an irregular quadrilateral floor plan.
The Lords of Trockau are first mentioned in documents in 1273. Although the castle of the Lords of Trockau is not mentioned in documents until 1316, it likely already existed at the time of the first mention of the Lords of Trockau. At the end of the 13th century or beginning of the 14th century, the castle came into the possession of the Lords Groß von Trockau, probably through marriage. They entered the service of Konrad von Schlüsselberg in 1307.
By 1390 at the latest, the castle was a fief of the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg. In the Princes' War, in which the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg fought on the side of Duke Ludwig of Bavaria against the Margrave of Bayreuth, the castle was destroyed in 1460/1462. Another destruction occurred in 1525 during the Peasants' War. Hastily restored, the castle was destroyed again in 1632 during the Thirty Years' War.
In place of the medieval castle, Karl Ludwig Kasimir Wilhelm Groß von und zu Trockau, Kohlstein and Tüchersfeld had the present castle built between 1769 and 1779. The castle is still owned by this family today.

Deceased family members of the House of Groß von Trockau were previously buried in the castle chapel, in Würzburg, or elsewhere. On June 16, 2007, a private family cemetery was consecrated on the castle grounds during the field procession that concluded the vow day of Hagelfeier.
