Trumau Castle, a historic moated castle, is located in the village of Trumau in the Baden district of Lower Austria. It is linked to the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz and today serves as an educational institution and museum.

History+

The origins of the estate date back to 1138, when Margrave Leopold IV of the Babenbergs gifted the Trumau estate to Heiligenkreuz Abbey. The Cistercians established a fortified grange there, which engaged in agriculture, viticulture, and sheep farming, and also had its own mill. In 1462, the estate briefly came into the possession of the mercenary leader Georg von Pottendorf, but was taken over by Hinko von Feinfalt as early as 1468. After its destruction in 1548 and another fire in 1621 under Gábor Bethlen, Abbot Michael Schnabel began expanding it into a castle in 1650, completed in 1667.
