Tullau Castle

In Tullau, a place already mentioned in documents since 1090, a rectangular residential tower complex with a curtain wall was built in the second quarter of the 13th century (heyday of Hohenstaufen castle building/transition from Romanesque to early Gothic). On the ground floor, there is still a Romanesque chapel today, consisting of a cross-vaulted choir and a barrel-vaulted "single-bay nave". Schenk Walther von Limpurg is presumed to be the builder. At that time, he was the Imperial Hereditary Cupbearer and had to exercise the patronage for the free imperial city of Hall as well as over the Comburg monastery for the Hohenstaufen royal and imperial house. The Limpurg vassal Heinrich von Tullau, mentioned in 1290, is associated with the second construction phase. During this time, the north side of the old curtain wall was demolished, a larger courtyard was created by wing walls, and this was enclosed to the north with another two-story tower building. The renovation in 1581 largely gave the castle its current appearance.

The curtain wall of the southern residential tower complex was built over. The two residential towers were transformed into an attractive Renaissance country estate. In 1642, the famous sculptor Leonhard Kern (1588-1662) acquired Tullau Castle. He lived and worked there until 1661. Between 1768 and 1770, under Maria Sibylla Schaffnerin, the half-timbered upper floor of the north building was replaced, and the two houses were connected by a wooden gallery on the east side of the inner courtyard. In 1851, the farmer Michael Huber bought the property. His descendants still inhabit the castle today.
