Tureholm Castle
Tureholm Castle is an imposing historical structure in the Swedish region of Södermanland, near the city of Trosa. Originally known as Gäddeholm, it looks back on a long and eventful history and today presents itself as an impressive example of Swedish castle architecture.
History+
The origins of Tureholm Castle date back to 1383, when Nils Gädda is mentioned as the first known owner of the then Gäddeholm Castle. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands within the Gädda family and later, through marriage, to the Sture family, including the prominent Sten Sture the Younger and his wife Christina Gyllenstierna. In 1567, ownership passed to Sigrid Sture and her husband Ture Pedersson Bielke. A significant reconstruction of the castle took place in 1576. Between 1665 and 1672, the castle was extensively redesigned according to plans by Erik Dahlbergh. A devastating destruction occurred in 1719 by Russian troops, after which the castle was rebuilt between 1729 and 1747 under the direction of Carl Hårleman. In 1740, it received its current name, Tureholm, from Thure Gabriel Bielke. Later alterations included the replacement of the west wing between 1796 and 1799, as well as extensive repairs and renovations from 1853 to 1855.
