Uebigau Castle

Uebigau Castle is the youngest castle in the Elbe-Elster district and is located in the historic town center of Uebigau. It was built in the Neo-Baroque style and features elements of Art Nouveau. Behind the building is an approximately two-hectare castle park from the 19th century.

In 1864, the Berlin building contractor Johannes August Schmidt acquired the Rittergut (manor) part 2 from the previous owner Heinrich Pinkerneil, had an old residential building demolished, and in 1864/65 had a manor house built as an "unauthorized construction."

Subsequently, the owners changed frequently and in quick succession (Friedrich Hürche, Max von Schönberg, Carl Böhm). From 1867 to at least 1878, Moritz Rutschmann from Finsterwalde was the owner of the property. He was employed in the construction of the Falkenberg-Cottbus railway line. In 1886, the new owner, Captain (ret.) Georg von Bismarck, made the castle more comfortable. In 1898, Paul Besckow is noted as the owner. Subsequently, the house was sold to Major Ernst Bock von Wülfingen, who gave the castle its current appearance. For this purpose, he had the central wing raised in 1904 according to plans by the Leipzig architect Gustav Pflaume, and added a mansard roof and a roof turret. The original tower on the park side was fitted with an onion dome.

In 1904, a greenhouse was built in the castle park, and in 1909/1910, a gardener's house was erected.

Rittmeister (Cavalry Captain) (ret.) von Bomhardt took over the estate from his father-in-law and was dispossessed and expelled by the communists in 1945.

In 1951, a youth hostel was established in the castle. Since 1990, it has been used as a "municipal castle hostel." Renovations took place in 1996/97 and 2000 in the interior.

In 2010/2011, the castle courtyard and ground floor were redesigned.
