Uherčice Castle

The origins of the current Uherčice Castle trace back to a 14th-century fortress. In the 16th century, under the patronage of the Lords of Schwarzenau, it was rebuilt and expanded into the chateau whose basic structures are still recognizable today. In 1768, the estate passed into the possession of the Lords of Hartig. After the end of World War II in 1945, the then owners were dispossessed and expelled, a measure legitimized by the so-called Beneš Decrees. Subsequently, the castle served various purposes, including as a barracks and even a women's prison. Around the turn of the millennium, the building fabric was in a critical state, but since 2005, extensive renovation work has been underway to preserve this historical heritage.

Uherčice Castle is located in the village of Uherčice in the Jihočeský kraj (South Bohemia) district within the Jihozápad (Southwest) region of the Czech Republic. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 450 meters above sea level.

Visitors have the opportunity to tour Uherčice Castle. The ongoing renovation work allows exploration of the castle construction site from April to October, offering insight into the restoration of this historical gem.
