Uherčice Castle

Around 1493, Leopold Kraiger von Kraigk had a late Gothic fortress built, whose square floor plan is still visible in the eastern part of the castle, the so-called "old castle". Leopold's nephew Wenzel Kraiger von Kraigk († 1566), inspired by his experiences during a trip to Italy, converted the Ungarschitz fortress into a Renaissance castle. As early as 1562, Wolf Streun von Schwarzenau acquired the castle, which he had expanded into a representative domicile. The Renaissance castle was expropriated in 1945 by means of the Beneš Decrees and subsequently used as a barracks and women's prison. In the years after 2000, the building fabric was in a critical condition; from 2005, renovation work took place, with the castle construction site being accessible from April to October.
