Uitikon Castle

Somewhat south of the village center of Uitikon, on a hill, lies the former residence of the lords of Uitikon and Nieder-Urdorf. Colonel Hans-Jakob Steiner von Hallwil and his successors expanded "the new house on the Büel" into a castle between 1624 and 1626. In 1650, a baroque facade was erected, in keeping with the taste of the time, as the still-preserved portal shows. Even after the demise of the lordship, the Steiners continued to live in the castle for a long time. In 1872, a cooperative bought the entire property and established a compulsory educational institution for women and men. In 1925, this was transformed into today's Cantonal Work Education Institution and in 1979, a closed ward was added.
In 1625, the lord Hans Jakob Steiner fulfilled his brother's wish and set about building a church for Uitikon. The inhabitants were not particularly enthusiastic about this, as they had to perform significant corvée labor. However, a sermon of punishment by the lord resulted in the church, with its attached turret, being under roof and completed just six weeks later. Thus, Uitikon became the first municipality with a post-Reformation church building.
