Ulmerfeld Castle, a structure in Lower Austria, stands on a hill near Amstetten. Originally built as a fortress, it evolved into an administrative center and today houses a youth hostel.

History+

The first documented mention of Ulmerfeld dates back to August 15, 995, when King Otto III transferred the property to the Bishop of Freising. In 1189, the Prince-Bishopric of Freising secured the "Burgwerk" right for its estates from Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. In 1321, the complex was expanded into an administrative center and served as the seat of the Freising administrator. The rule of the Freisingers ended in 1803 with secularization. From 1808 to 1823, the castle was under state administration before changing hands multiple times in the following decades.
