Umkirch Castle

In the Middle Ages, Umkirch was home to various noble families, including presumably the Lords of Tübingen in 1474. Later, the Roggenbach and Beroldingen families expanded their holdings before they passed to the Kageneck entailment in 1740. The original castle was demolished in 1743, and the central part was rebuilt, followed by the side wings between 1788 and 1789. Flora von Kageneck, a cousin of Metternich, had the castle expanded in the Italian country house style and a belvedere added in 1816/17. Her coat of arms still adorns the gable today. In 1827, Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Baden acquired the estate as a summer residence. Through an inheritance contract, it passed to her daughter Princess Josephine of Baden, wife of Karl Anton von Hohenzollern, who made it an inalienable family estate in 1887.
