Untermaßfeld Castle

The first documented mention of Maßfeld Castle occurred in the first half of the 14th century. A source from 1350 indicates that the Truchsess brothers made a fortification available to the Bishop of Würzburg. In the 15th century, the complex served as a dower house for the Henneberg Countess Katharina. After the death of Count Georg Ernst von Henneberg, the inheritance was divided between the Albertine and Ernestine lines (Saxe-Meiningen). During the Thirty Years' War, the complex was destroyed in 1646, but later refortified before being abandoned as a fortress.
