In Ühlingen-Birkendorf-Untermettingen in the Waldshut district, Baden-Württemberg, Untermettingen Castle rises on a rocky spur about 20 meters above the Steina River.

History+

As early as 855, donations of estates in Mettingen to the Rheinau Monastery are documented, including those from a priest named Meginhard. Later, in 875, Wolf von Mettingen also transferred his property to the same monastery. The first known lords of the castle, the brothers Rudolf and Johann von Mettingen, were mentioned in 1279. In 1349, Friedrich von Ofteringen, a Knight of St. George, appeared. Heinrich von Erzingen, who was named patron in 1427 and administered pledged estates of the Princes of Fürstenberg, resided in the castle from 1437.
