On the northeastern edge of the village of Unterriexingen, which today belongs to Markgröningen in the Ludwigsburg district, is Unterriexingen Castle. The complex, situated on a high terrace in the Enz Valley, was originally a medieval castle, evolved into a Neoclassical palace, and is now a historical landmark in Baden-Württemberg.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the early 12th century, when a castle belonging to the Lords of Riexingen was built around 1100. This Staufer-era complex was first documented in the late 12th century. Surrounded by a moat, the castle likely served to secure timber transport on the Enz River and the parallel road.
