Uppsala Castle

The castle's origins date back to 1547, when construction began under King Gustav Vasa, with the foundation stone said to have been laid in 1549. Henrik von Cöllen initially supervised the work, followed by Pavel Schütz, who expanded the complex, adding a large outer bailey and bastions. A fire in 1572 damaged parts of the castle, prompting John III to commission its reconstruction under the direction of Franz Parr. Parr, who had previously designed Güstrow Castle, influenced the building with details reminiscent of his earlier works, such as the King Jan Gate. After Parr's death in 1580, construction continued under Charles IX and Gustav II Adolf, completing the so-called Long Castle and the northern tower. Another devastating fire in 1702 reduced large parts of Uppsala and the castle to ashes. It was not until 1744 that a new reconstruction was decided upon under Hereditary Prince Adolf Frederick, which lasted until 1762 and included the Long Castle and the northern tower. The southern tower was only completed between 1815 and 1820 and temporarily served as a prison.

Uppsala Castle is located in the city of Uppsala, in the Uppsala district, in the Uppsala region of Sweden. It stands at an elevation of approximately 39 meters above sea level.

Today, Uppsala Castle houses various institutions of Uppsala University, an art museum, and the residence of the County Governor of Uppsala County. A wooden bell tower with a historic bell from 1588 stands on a remnant of a wall.
