In the municipality of Kalletal in the Lippe district is Varenholz Castle, an example of Weser Renaissance architecture. Originally situated directly on the Weser river, a historic bridge still points to the former course of the river. The castle now houses a private boarding school.

History+

The origins of Varenholz date back to 1188, when a castle belonging to the Lords of Vornholte was first mentioned. In 1323, Simon I zur Lippe acquired the complex, thereby extending his dominion to the Weser. The current castle complex began to take shape in 1540, and between 1591 and 1600, Count Simon VI zur Lippe transformed the building into one of the Weser Renaissance castles.
