Veckerhagen Castle

Veckerhagen Castle is a baroque three-wing complex located near the banks of the Weser River. It was built next to the "old" castle, erected in 1430–1431 (and largely destroyed by fires in 1914 and 1967), by order of Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel as a hunting lodge. Various construction years between 1683 and 1694 are suggested in literature. Possible architects are Paul du Ry or Johann Konrad Giesler.

In the 18th century, the castle and its associated domain were owned by Imperial Countess Barbara Christine von Bernhold, mistress of Landgrave Carl since 1721. After her death in 1770, the property reverted to Landgrave Friedrich II of Hesse-Kassel and was sold in 1810, during the time of the Westphalian Kingdom, by King Jérôme Bonaparte for 2000 Reichstaler to the ancestors of the Habich manufacturing family from Kassel, who still own it today, including the adjacent paint factory.
