Velden Castle, a building dating back to the late 16th century, today serves as a luxurious hotel on the western shore of Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia.

History+

The origins of Velden Castle can be traced back to Bartholomäus Khevenhüller. In 1585, he acquired an estate in Velden to establish a residence halfway between his ancestral seat, Landskron Castle, and Klagenfurt. He had a castle built there, which was completed in 1603. After Khevenhüller's death, it initially remained in family possession until the Protestant Khevenhüllers had to leave Carinthia in 1629. Siegmund Ludwig von Dietrichstein appropriated the castle in 1639, and it remained in the possession of the Dietrichstein family until 1861. A fire in 1762 damaged parts of the castle, which was subsequently restored and thereafter used as a post station and guesthouse.
