Versoix Castle

To be privately owned

Versoix Castle, a historic structure in the Swiss canton of Geneva, is a testament to medieval fortification art that evolved into a representative residence over the centuries. It is perched on a part of the promontory in the municipality of Versoix and impresses with its striking appearance and eventful history.

History+

The origins of Versoix Castle date back to the 13th century. Between 1258 and 1268, Peter II of Savoy had a fortress built on this site, forming the core of the new village of Versoix. Towards the end of the 18th century, a farm surrounded by gardens was located here. The former residence of the "lords of the castle," high-ranking officials until the end of the 18th century, was later inhabited by farmers, including the Riondel family and Paul Courvoisier, the mayor of Versoix. In 1930, the lawyer and deputy Hermann Dutoit acquired the property and had it extensively restored. The castle's connection to the famous bearded lady Josephine Boisdechêne, who was born in Versoix in 1831 and presumably grew up in this house, is noteworthy.

Location+

On site+

Today, Versoix Castle is privately owned. It presents itself as an imposing four-story building that skillfully utilizes the natural unevenness of the terrain. The facades are uniformly designed, with symmetrically arranged windows and numerous doors and windows adorned with limestone keystones. The park extends to the height of the third floor. Major structural changes are barely noticeable, apart from a large covered hatch and a window enlarged in 1930.
