Villigst Castle
Haus Villigst in the Villigst district of the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Schwerte is the seat of the Evangelisches Studienwerk e.V. Villigst and the Evangelische Akademie Villigst.
Originally, a knight's estate was located on the same site, which was allegedly mentioned in documents as early as 1170. Around 1300, the knight Sobbo de Svirte († 1322) lived here. Until 1397, his descendants were also the lords of Schwerte and also provided the local pastors. With the granting of town rights by the Count of Mark, the citizens of Schwerte were largely freed from their tax obligations.
The building that stands today was erected by Ludewig von Elverfelt in 1819 in the Neoclassical style. Since 1948, it has been owned by the Evangelical Church of Westphalia, which uses it for its gifted student support program, Evangelisches Studienwerk e.V. Villigst, and its continuing education institution, Evangelische Akademie.
