Voergaard Castle

The origins of Voergaard Castle lie in a medieval manor that passed to Børglum Monastery in 1510. Under Bishop Niels Stygge Krumpen, it was expanded into a moated castle. After the Reformation in 1536, Voergaard became royal property. King Frederick II transferred the estate to Karen Krabbe in 1578, and her daughter Ingeborg Skeel significantly shaped the castle's current appearance. In the 17th century, Voergaard repeatedly experienced sieges and occupations by Swedish troops during the Danish-Swedish wars. From 1686 to 1791, it was owned by the Reetz family before changing hands several times in the 19th century. In 1872, Peter Brønnum-Scavenius acquired the castle, had it restored, and expanded the estate. In 1955, the French-Danish Count Ejnar Oberbech-Clausen bought the castle and assembled a significant art collection, including works by Goya, Rubens, and El Greco. After his death, the castle and its art treasures passed to a family foundation, which manages it to this day.

Voergaard Castle is located in Dronninglund-Voergaard, in the municipality of Brønderslev, in the North Jutland region of Denmark. It stands at an elevation of approximately 17 meters above sea level.

Today, Voergaard Castle is open to visitors and can be toured. It serves as a museum for the impressive art collection of Count Ejnar Oberbech-Clausen and is a popular destination for culture enthusiasts.
