Vöstenhof Castle

Vöstenhof Castle is a castle in Vöstenhof, Lower Austria. It is privately owned.

The "Fortress zum Hof" (today Vöstenhof) was probably built in the 13th century. In 1381, Albero Stuchs von Trautmannsdorf sold the castle to Duke Albrecht III. In 1387, Johann von Liechtenstein received the dominion, but the dominion was soon again administered by the provincial governors themselves. In 1483, Martin Neidegger received the fief and it remained in the family until 1592. During this time, the fortress was referred to as "Hoff zu Neydeckh". In 1592, Hieronymus Wurmbrandt, the hereditary master chef of Styria, bought the castle for 13,000 guilders. In 1597, he had the castle converted into the present Renaissance castle. From 1621 to 1912, the castle was owned by the Counts Hoyos. In the 19th century, they allowed the building to steadily decay until restoration began in 1894. From 1910–12, the keep was raised and the facade renewed. Then the Princes Schwarzenberg bought the castle, and it subsequently passed into the possession of the Czernin family. General Emil Graf Spannocchi, husband of a Countess Czernin, was the lord of the castle until his death. In 1984, his widow sold the property to Peter Max, who is still the owner today and had the castle restored.
