Voglsang Castle

The construction of Voglsang Castle began in 1877 and was completed in 1882. Josef Werndl served as the builder, having acquired the property in the Voglsang district as early as 1873. He commissioned the master builder Anton Plochberger for the design, who incorporated inspirations from Scottish castle complexes. However, after the death of his wife, Werndl lost interest in the construction and offered the shell of the building as a gift to the city of Steyr, on the condition that a poorhouse be established there, which was rejected. Attempts to sell it also failed, and Werndl even considered demolition. Nevertheless, the building served as an exhibition venue in 1880 and 1884.
