Wabern Castle, a former hunting lodge, is situated on the northwestern edge of the municipality of Wabern in the Schwalm-Eder district. It features baroque architecture.

History+

Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Kassel commissioned the construction of the three-story baroque main building of the castle between 1704 and 1707 for his wife, Maria Anna Amalia of Courland. The designs were provided by court architect Johann Conrad Giesler. For its construction in the marshy Eder floodplain, the ground had to be drained and stabilized with piles. Around 1770, Landgrave Friedrich II expanded the complex with side buildings, connected to the main structure by galleries, giving the castle its current horseshoe shape. This work was carried out by architect Simon Louis du Ry.
