In the village of Wachendorf, which belongs to the town of Mechernich in the Euskirchen district, is Wachendorf Castle, a manor house. The property combines medieval origins with later transformations into a country estate.

History+

The first mention of Wachendorf as a vogtei dates back to 1190. On the current site of the castle, there was originally a knight's seat with a keep-like tower, whose lower floors and wall sections of the northwestern half of the manor house still originate from the medieval castle. In the early 16th century, the complex came into the possession of the noble Palandt family through marriage. Under Marsilius III von Palandt, witch trials took place in 1628, resulting in the deaths of 16 people. In 1780, Bavarian Major General Adolph Freiherr von Ritz acquired the castle.
