Wächtersbach Castle, a lowland castle in Wächtersbach, Hesse, has origins in the 12th century. Once a Staufer complex, it developed into a moated castle and later became the seat of a noble line.

History+

The origins of Wächtersbach Castle lie in a hunting and security complex built at the end of the 12th century on behalf of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. The settlement that developed under the protection of this complex was first mentioned in 1236. In the 13th century, it was converted into a moated castle, the former water features of which are still visible in the castle park today. The first documented mention of the castle dates back to 1324. It served as part of the security installations in the old royal land of Wetterau, protecting the castles in Gelnhausen and Büdingen.
