Wätjens Castle
Wätjens Castle is a historic estate in northern Bremen, which once served as the summer residence of a prominent merchant family. It impresses with its castle-like architecture in the English Tudor Gothic style and is surrounded by an extensive landscape garden.
History+
The origins of the estate date back to 1830, when the Bremen merchant Diedrich Heinrich Wätjen acquired land and had a country house built for a summer residence. At the same time, the surrounding park was designed as an English landscape garden according to the plans of landscape gardener Isaak Altmann. Between 1858 and 1864, under his son Christian Heinrich Wätjen, the original dwelling was replaced by a castle-like villa in the English Tudor Gothic style, designed by architect Heinrich Müller. The Wätjen family sold the estate in 1916, after it had been used as a military hospital during the First World War. The park was divided between the adjacent industrial companies, with the castle falling to Bremer Vulkan. During World War II, the spire of the taller tower was removed, and a post-war fire destroyed parts of the roof and some gables, which were subsequently only temporarily restored. Since 1973, Wätjens Castle has been a protected monument.
