Wain Castle

Wain Castle is a castle built in 1780/81 by Baron Johann Theobald von Herman in Wain, a municipality in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia. The castle is now the seat of the Baron von Herman'schen Rent- u. Forstamtes (Baron von Herman's Rent and Forestry Office).

Wain is located on the northeastern wooded edge of the Biberach district and has the additional peculiarity that the Reformation was introduced in Wain in 1573. After the Thirty Years' War, Protestant refugees from Styria and Carinthia were also settled in the village. These exiles formed the main part of the local population.

The Dehio Handbook states that a certain Eitelfriedrich Knoll built the castle in the Neoclassical style in 1780/81 for Baron Benedikt von Hermann, based on designs by the Munich court architect Lorenzo Quaglio.

The main building is a two-story plastered building with a central risalit. The outbuildings are free-standing wing buildings, which were formerly used as residences for the families of the gardeners and hunters. Furthermore, there are stables with outbuildings and a fenced park. The main building contains a two-flight staircase. The interiors were altered in the 18th/19th centuries. The State Monuments Office's register also notes that Johann Theobald von Herman had his permanent residence in Memmingen.
