Walchen Castle

The origins of Walchen Castle date back to 1583, when Hans Christoph Geymann acquired the Walchen dominion. In 1590, he had a new castle built in place of the former Walchen Castle. His son Ortolf, a supporter of the Protestant estates, had to flee after the aristocratic revolt, but his stepbrothers managed to preserve the property for the family. In 1632, the estate passed to Franz Christoph Khevenhüller, who, however, sold it to Nikolaus von Gurland as early as 1638. After the extinction of the Counts of Gurland in 1736, Count Leopold Christoph von Schallenberg inherited the castle. Later, Walchen changed hands several times, including to the Counts of Clam and the Barons von Aretin.
