A castle-like complex from the 12th century, Waldeck Castle, stands in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in Hesse. Located in the northern part of the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park, its rocky perch above the northern shore of Lake Edersee offers views.

History+

The first documented mention of the complex dates back to 1120. Through the marriage of Count Widekind I of Schwalenberg to Lutrud of Itter and his son Volkwin to Luitgard, daughter of Count Poppo I of Ziegenhain, the castle came into the possession of the Schwalenbergs. From 1180, a branch of this family named themselves after the castle. Until 1655, the castle served as the residence of the Counts of Waldeck before they moved to Arolsen.
