Waldegg Castle (Feldbrunnen)

The origins of Waldegg Castle date back to the late 17th century. It was built between 1682 and 1690 for the Solothurn bailiff Johann Viktor von Besenval, who came from the Aosta Valley and achieved great prestige in Solothurn. The castle remained in the possession of the von Besenval family for a long time; Peter Viktor von Besenval, born in 1721, took over the country estate. He served as commander of the troops in Paris during the French Revolution. In 1865, the property changed hands through marriage and purchase to the patrician family of Sury-Büssy. In the late 19th century, the castle underwent a redesign with the establishment of two separate apartments and was inhabited year-round from the early 20th century. Due to a lack of direct descendants, Waldegg Castle was transferred to the Canton of Solothurn as a foundation in 1963. From 1989, the canton began extensive reconstruction work to restore the Baroque ensemble and use it as a meeting center.

Waldegg Castle is located in the municipality of Feldbrunnen-St. Niklaus in the Lebern district, Canton of Solothurn, Switzerland. It is situated at an altitude of approx. 480 m above sea level.

Today, Waldegg Castle can be visited. It serves as a living museum and regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts, and private events. The rooms are largely furnished with original furniture from the 17th to 19th centuries, and the Baroque garden has been reconstructed.
