Waldenburg Castle

Waldenburg Castle is a castle built in the Neoclassical style in Waldenburg in Southwest Saxony.

The castle dates back to a fortress presumably built in the 12th century during the colonization of the Pleißenland by Hugo von Waldenburg. In 1259, the complex, and in 1378, the Lordship of Waldenburg, were first mentioned in documents. It was owned by Friedrich von Schönburg.

In 1430, the Hussites destroyed the castle, after which it was rebuilt as a palace. After the castle burned down in 1519, it was rebuilt again. In the 18th century, further security measures and alterations were carried out under Otto Ludwig (1643–1701) and Albrecht Carl Friedrich von Schönburg (1710–1765).

During the German Revolution, the castle was burned down by the people in 1848 and only rebuilt in 1859 as a four-wing complex with Neo-Romanesque and Tudor Gothic elements. From 1909 to 1912, extensive renovations of the castle were carried out under Prince Otto Victor II (1882–1914). In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the Communists.

From 1947, it was used as a specialized hospital for lung diseases, which existed until 1998. Since 2005, the building has been renovated and used for events and tours.
