In the municipality of Wolfsberg-Waldenstein in Austrian Carinthia, Waldenstein Castle is situated at an elevation of approximately 773 meters above sea level. Originally built as a fortress, it was transformed into a castle and served as a center of the Reformation in the region.

The origins of Waldenstein Castle date back to around 1150, when it was built as a fortress on behalf of the Diocese of Bamberg. From the 12th to the 17th century, the Lords Ungnad von Sonnegg were the feudal lords and owners. They were also responsible for converting the fortress into a Gothic castle in the 15th century. In the 16th century, Waldenstein played a role in the Reformation. Hans von Ungnad, a then-owner, supported the dissemination of reformational writings by funding a printing press in Urach.
