Waldmannshausen Castle (Elbgrund)

Waldmannshausen Castle is a moated castle built in 1486 in Elbgrund (municipality of Elbtal) in the Limburg-Weilburg district in Hesse, about 18 km north of Limburg an der Lahn. In earlier times, the castle formed a unit with the neighboring Waldmannshausen Estate. The ruins of a moated castle are also located on the grounds. The property is situated on the edge of the municipality on the connecting road to Frickhofen. Since 1935, the castle, together with a castle building constructed in 1790, has served as a school country home. The owner of the castle is the Schullandheim Burg Waldmannshausen e.V. (School Country Home Waldmannshausen Castle registered association) with its registered office in Hagen, Westphalia.
From 1136 to 1138, the family of Waldmannshausen was documented as the builders of the castle, listed as ministeriales in 1191, and later as knights.
In the 17th century, the castle fell into disrepair, was restored in 1786 by Christian Heinrich von Erath, and expanded in 1790 with a castle building next to the existing castle. After 1835, the castle changed owners frequently and came into the possession of the School Country Home Association of the Westphalian city of Hagen in 1935.
Today, the complex is a protected monument and has also received protection status for wartime according to the Hague Convention.
Complex+
The moats of the small complex, which had two defensive towers positioned diagonally, are now leveled. The three-story late Gothic castle building in front of and next to the complex is well preserved.
Opposite the castle is the former stable. Adjacent to the castle complex is the former manor farm, which was long a private agricultural enterprise and now serves only as a residential building.
