Walkering Castle

The first mention of Walkering dates back to 1320 as a Schaunberg fief, assigned to the dominion of Kammer. Following the Schaunbergers' defeat in a conflict with the Habsburgs, Walkering became property of the sovereign. In 1380, Duke Albrecht III enfeoffed Rüdiger Dachsenbeck with Walkering, a enfeoffment renewed by Duke Albrecht IV in 1395. By 1423, Paul Walchinger was named as the holder of the fief. Under the Walchinger family, the Walkering dominion was merged with that of Viecht in 1455, with jurisdiction located in Viecht. This led later owners to often refer to themselves as “of and to Walkering on Viecht”. The castle frequently changed hands, including the families Forster von Höhenperg, Oberdorfer zu Gaisbach, Frondorfer von Walkering zu Viecht, and Wiellinger von Au. In the 19th century, Walkering came into peasant ownership and remains in the possession of the Emminger family to this day.
