Wallenburg Castle

The first documentary mention of Wallenburg Castle dates back to 1270, although archaeological evidence may suggest older origins, such as remnants of rampart and ditch systems. From the 15th century, the complex, originally called Waldenberg, served as the main seat of the Waldeck lordship, which later became the County of Hohenwaldeck. This passed to Bavaria in 1734. After a fire in 1467, a new castle was built, which was partly renovated in the second half of the 17th century. In the early 19th century, the keep and the castle chapel were demolished. The castle changed hands several times, including the Gumppenberg, Fohr, and Gans families, before passing by inheritance to the von Kameke family.
