Walpersdorf Castle

The castle's origins date back to 1571, when Hans Ulrich von Ludmanstorf initiated its construction but died just one year later. In 1576, Helmhard VIII, Baron von Jörger, acquired the property and began its expansion. His son, Helmhard the Younger, finally completed the castle in 1619. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle came into the possession of Empress Eleonora Gonzaga. She stipulated that the Walpersdorf dominion should serve to financially support the Loreto Chapel in Vienna, which she had founded. After her death, Georg Ludwig von Sinzendorf acquired the castle and established Austria's first systematically planned factory there – a silk spinning mill.
