Early History and Reconstruction

Warthausen Castle was first mentioned in 1120 as being in the possession of the Lords of Warthausen. In 1474, it burned down and was subsequently rebuilt. From 1534-40, a new castle was built under Johann Philipp Schad. In 1623, the castle burned down again and was subsequently rebuilt. Further owners of the castle included Count Anton Heinrich Friedrich von Stadion, Christoph Martin Wieland, Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder, Sophie von La Roche, Baron Friedrich August Karl von Koenig. Since 1985, the castle and estate have been in the private ownership of Franz Freiherr von Ulm-Erbach.
