Wasseralfingen Castle

The origins of Wasseralfingen Castle lie in a moated castle from the 14th century. As early as 1337, a manor house in Wasseralfingen was mentioned when Counts Ludwig and Friedrich von Oettingen granted the lesser nobleman Ulrich von Ahelfingen permission to build a moated castle. In 1382, the possessions of the Lords of Ahelfingen had to be divided due to the extinction of the male line. The locality and manor house were split into a front and a rear half, which went to Ulrich von Horn and Ulrich den Hagger. The front half changed hands several times, while the rear remained with the von Horn family. In 1479, the von Ahelfingen family from Hohenalfingen regained possession of the castle. After the death of the last male heir, Wolfgang von Ahelfingen, in 1545, the castle fell to Ellwangen Abbey.
