In the municipality of Gaal, Styria, Austria, Schloss Wasserberg is on a small hill that was once encircled by a wide moat and swamps. It is situated at the confluence of the Ingering and Gaal streams and is currently owned by a foundation.

History+

The origins of Wasserberg date back to the 10th century, when the Archdiocese of Salzburg, which had acquired the Ingering and Gaal valleys around 860, possibly had a fortified structure built on this site. In 1174, the donation of a forest near “wazerperc” to Seckau Abbey was confirmed. With the founding of the Diocese of Seckau in 1218, the area around Wasserberg came into the possession of the Bishop of Seckau. Around 1260, Bishop Bernhard of Seckau had a castle built, which bore the name of the region.
